DJ Matrix: The Bass That Came Back

DJ Matrix: The Bass That Came Back

Some artists return to music after a long break. DJ Matrix returned with nearly four decades of history behind him. First established in 1986, he made his mark with Feel My Bass, an independent release that became closely tied to breakdance competitions around the world. Decades later, the track still carries a strong following online, with fans continuing to share it and leave thousands of positive comments.

The story could have ended there. Matrix was serving in the US Marines when he released the record, and the Gulf War soon brought his music career to an unexpected halt. For years, the decks went quiet. Then Egyptian Lover came looking for him.

That reunion led to Hypnotic, released on 808 Day in August 2025, marking Matrix's return to recording. More recently, he teamed up with Beat Junkies founder J.Rocc for Feel My Bass (Reloaded), released on March 22. It is more than a remake. It revisits the track that started everything while giving it a fresh production approach, and Matrix considers the new version even stronger than the original.

His current work also opens another door. House Of Neo is his new alter ego and the home for his House and Dubstep material. The project began with Drift Away on June 5, followed by Tension, which takes a noticeably different direction. Road Trippin' With Angels adds another shade to the project, built around a fun, uplifting feel that suits long drives and open roads.

There is something appealing about the contrast in Matrix's catalog. Feel My Bass belongs to the raw energy of early breakdance culture, while his newer work looks toward House and Dubstep without abandoning the physical impact that has always defined his music. The sounds may change, but the instinct remains the same: make records that move people.

For listeners drawn to this history, the connection runs through electro, early hip-hop, breakdance culture, and the West Coast sounds associated with artists such as Egyptian Lover and World Class Wreckin' Cru. Films and documentaries centered on breakdancing and street culture also provide useful context for the world that helped shape Matrix's early work.

With a plan to release a new single each month through the end of 2026 before bringing the material together as a full album, DJ Matrix is not simply revisiting his past. He is adding new chapters to a story that began in 1986 and, remarkably, still has plenty of bass left in it.
